Greens industrial relations spokesperson Adam Bandt MP today welcomed news that the Senate Inquiry into temporary work visa programmes has agreed to the Greens’ call to host a special hearing into reports of worker exploitation by 7-Eleven.
“Over the last week, we have heard more and more reports about the rampant exploitation of 7-Eleven workers across the country,” Mr Bandt said.
“To make matters worse, reports have also claimed that 7-Eleven head office have been aware of its franchisees underpaying their employees for over a year now, yet allowed this exploitation to continue.”
“These claims must be tested and the workers must be heard, so I am pleased that the Senate Committee has agreed to the Greens’ call for a special hearing into these reports.”
"The claims will now be properly heard as part of the temporary work visa inquiry, which will help us learn how to prevent exploitation like this from happening again."
Mr Bandt also said the Greens support an amnesty for any of the 7-Eleven workers who want to make a complaint as to remove the threat of deportation.
